Brilliant season start to the CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup at the Hungaroring!
Hungaroring. The CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup season started at the Hungaroring on the 21st to the 23rd of April 2017. The teams and drivers also did not allow themselves to be stopped by the almost winter-like weather conditions at the famous Hungarian Formula-1 race track and were all highly motivated as they took their places on the starting grid. The 4.381-km track Hungaroring certainly put it up to the drivers, with the “in-field” being particularly challenging.

Twingo-Cup Champion Pirmin Weixler celebrated an impressive debut
It already started to become apparent during the free practice sessions on Friday and the first qualifying session on Saturday that last year’s champion in the Renault Twingo Cup, Pirmin Weixler (GER, TOYO TIRES MOTORSPORT), was certainly getting to grips with the CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup racing car. He secured himself a great lap time, which in turn secured him pole position on the grid for the first race. Just behind him were David Wassermann (GER, U4 AUTOMOTIVE Racing) and Björn Dietrich (GER, Pfister-Racing by TOP-EXPRESS).

The excitement of course grew in the run up to the standing Grand-Prix start to the first race. Last year’s champion Wolfgang Kriegl (AUT, MAINFRANKEN-MOTODROM Racing) had a difficult challenge to overcome. After experiencing technical problems with his CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup racing car, he had to start the race from the back of the grid.
Once the race started, all eyes were initially focused on the leading cars: Weixler had a good start, but then had to defend his position against attacks from the strongly performing Björn Dietrich, as well as David Wassermann, who were able to put the leader under pressure, with both also taking over the lead at stages during this hard-fought three-way battle that was so exciting to watch.

But Pirmin Weixler was able to start a clever counter attack and secured himself the lead with a skillful overtaking maneuver. This was the outset of an extremely tight duel fought out between Björn Dietrich and David Wassermann for second place, which the youngster Wassermann was able to decide in his favor after a strong performance. Behind the leading group of three, Wolfgang Kriegl was able to secure an important fourth-place finish and the 5 classification points on offer. Weixler won his very first CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup race at the very first time of asking, taking the checkered flag ahead of Wassermann, Dietrich and Kriegl. Fabian Piwetz was also able to make a marked improvement in his performance. In his very first touring car race EVER, the talented Austrian was able to finish in 5th place.

In the second race on Sunday, Pirmin Weixler was able to claim his second pole position and then secured the lead when the race started, even managing to open up a gap between himself and his pursuers. Behind him, it was now up to Björn Dietrich to show exactly what he was capable of: The Wittenberg native was able to come out on top of the three-way contest ahead of both Wolfgang Kriegl and David Wassermann, and he then took off in pursuit of the leader with exceptionally fast lap times.
Wolfgang Kriegl then took on David Wassermann in a wheel-to-wheel duel, which the shrewd Wassermann was ultimately able to gain the upper hand in.

Pirmin Weixler crossed the line as leader following another perfect drive, giving his team TOYO TIRES MOTORSPORT its second win of the weekend ahead of Björn Dietrich and David Wassermann.
Despite the fast lap times, Wolfgang Kriegl just missed out on a podium finish ahead of Fabian Piwetz, who was able to improve his speed by a further second. The two Austrians are now looking at their upcoming “home race” with a lot of motivation.
The next stop for races 3 & 4 of the CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup will be at the Red Bull Ring (AUT) from the 18th to the 21st of May, 2017. For this race, the number of competitors in the field increased further and the fans can certainly look forward to further exciting duels when the motto will once again be: “close, closer, CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup!”
