Gripping CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup touring car action at the Red Bull Ring!

Gripping CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup touring car action at the Red Bull Ring!

Red Bull Ring. After this year’s season opener at the Hungaroring as part of the World Touring Car Championship (FIA WTCR), the CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup drivers arrived at another Formula 1 racing track, namely the Red Bull Ring. Highly motivated, the aspiring young drivers from karting were going to enter into a duel with ambitious gentlemen drivers on the 4.3 km long Austrian racing track. The motto is once again “Close, closer, CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup!” from May 17 to 19, 2018.

The CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup is an affordable way of enjoying touring car motor sport, and thrills drivers and fans alike with close wheel-on-wheel duels. In particular, the appealing look of the racing cars, and the prize for the overall winner, a free test drive in a TCR racing car, all add to the excitement.

David Wassermann (GER, Mainfranken Motodrom Racing Team) was once again the man of the weekend having taken 4 victories in a row now!

At the open training sessions on Thursday, the drivers had the opportunity to get used to the racing track and racing cars, which was also essential as there were no less than 3 drivers making their debut at the CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup during the racing weekend: Martin Rennhofer (AUT), Thorsten Tross (GER) and Christoph Pflügler (GER) were competing in the Chevy brand cup for the first time.

The local competitor Fabian Piwetz (AUT) lined up at the start extremely motivated as the young racing driver lives in Styria and has many fans to impress at the Red Bull Ring who are keeping their fingers crossed for the ambitious driver.

Pole position, a record and two victories for David Wassermann

Following his impressive time training, David Wassermann (GER) secured pole position for the first race and was correspondingly motivated at the start. After the lights turned green, Fabian Piwetz (AUT) took off in pursuit but was forced to keep an eye on Christoph Pflügler (GER) and Fabian Heggli (SUI) in his rear view mirror, who were hot on his trail. With Wassermann having been able to increase his lead, there was a fantastic three-way fight between Christoph Pflügler (GER), Fabian Heggli (SUI) and Thorsten Tross (GER) for the remaining place on the podium. In the heat of the battle, Heggli went into the wrong gear and had to park his racing car at the edge of the track for the TOYO TIRES MOTORSPORT team. Pflügler was victorious and won a sensational place on the podium in his first race in the cup.

Fabian Piwetz (AUT) impressed with his comeback in the cup and appears to be the only driver at the moment who can hold a candle to David Wassermann (GER)!

Fabian Piwetz & Christoph Pflügler fill the podium

In the second race, Wassermann was once again able to win through as the leader, even though Fabian Piwetz was now much closer on his tail and was able to improve his lap times. Christoph Pflügler grabbed third place again, thus collecting plenty of championship points. Thorsten Tross crossed the finishing line in 4th place and can be very happy with his debut in the cup too, Martin Rennhofer took the other qualifying position. Fabian Heggli wasn’t able to start the second race.

Now the drivers are eagerly awaiting the next racing weekend at the Automotodrom Grobnik (Croatia) from August 3 to 5, 2018. One or two of the drivers are sure to combine the racing weekend with a holiday: the Mediterranean is just a few kilometers aways from the racing track!

3rd place for Björn Dietrich and the Pfister Racing team in the Octavia Cup at the Red Bull Ring

3rd place for Björn Dietrich and the Pfister Racing team in the Octavia Cup at the Red Bull Ring

Red Bull Ring. The 3rd and 4th qualifying races at this year’s racing season in the Skoda Octavia Cup were held from May 17 to 20, 2018 on the Austrian Formula 1 circuit in the heart of Styria. On the 4.3km long Red Bull Ring, the teams and drivers were welcomed with a highly modern paddock as well as pit lanes and a Formula 1 standard circuit. Paired with a unique atmosphere in the Austrian mountains, the racing weekend at the Red Bull Ring certainly constitutes one of the Octavia Cup’s season highlights.

Team leader Andreas Pfister commented as follows: “After the first racing weekend in the Most Autodrom, in which we were already able to demonstrate our racing car’s performance, we have once again been working intensively on our racing car in the last weeks and I am certain that we made further progress in the areas of framework and braking. We already have a lot of experience with Volkswagen racing cars and, of course, want to convert this into good results. In the Octavia Cup it can get tough quite quickly which is why we celebrate every tenth of a second that we can find. Björn Dietrich (GER) replaced our Wolfgang Kriegl (AUT) as the driver for reasons related to deadlines in the Red Bull Ring. We are already looking forward to how Björn will perform in the Cup during his guest appearance.”

Björn Dietrich completed a guest start at the Red Bull Ring and took to the Octavia Cup racing car very quickly!

The Skoda Octavia Cup presents many racers with a cost-effective alternative to the TCR series as Octavia Cup racing cars are only slightly different to TCR ones in terms of performance but almost 50% cheaper to bring to the circuit in terms of input costs.

Sensational podium placing in the first race

After Björn Dietrich was able to grab 7th place in the qualifying time trials, he was already delighted at his racing car’s performance. The Red Bull Ring course seemed to be well suited to both Dietrich as a driver and the Pfister Racing team’s Octavia Cup racing car’s set up.
Straight after the release of the “Indianapolis Start”, Dietrich showed his abilities and continued to improve his lap times. He was able to seize some positions in duels and also benefited from two competitors’ driving errors as it had begun to lightly rain on the rear section of the course. He used this to advance further forward and positioned himself in a sensational 3rd place with a strong performance against the more experienced Octavia Cup competitors.

Chaos at the starting phase costs all chances in race 2

Conversely, the second race on Sunday did not go to plan – in rainy conditions, Björn Dietrich was steered towards the sidelines by an over exuberant competitor in the starting phase. As that driver had significantly passed his breaking point, a collision was unavoidable and, with that, the second race was over prematurely.

“Our driver, Björn Dietrich, gave a very strong performance this racing weekend and was able to use our racing car’s performance against the competition. We were just unlucky in the second race, we should just forget things like that. We are happy about the first podium placing of this Octavia Cup season and are certain that Wolfgang Kriegl will bring in further good results for our team during the course of the season,” said Andreas Pfister.

Touring car action worth seeing in both races

After the free training and the first official qualifying session, the drivers competed in the first race on Friday, which was started from a standing “Grand Prix” start. After the starting lights were extinguished, David Wassermann (GER, TOYO TIRES MOTORSPORT) reached his pole position in the first lap of racing, behind him however were Marcus Zeiner (AUT, MAINFRANKEN MOTODROM Racing) and Fabian Heggli (SUI, Magnet-Shop.net Racing). Both Zeiner and Heggli have been consistently improving in the CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup and have been able to continuously lower their lap times.

The heated battle on Saturday went in favor of Wassermann again

Whilst the Hungarian sun burnt down hotter and hotter on the racing track, the drivers had to give it their all physically to get the best performance out of their touring car. After David Wassermann won the first race, he also put on a memorable show in the second. The chasers came closer and closer, but the young racing driver did not let this opportunity pass him by and clinched the second win ahead of Marcus Zeiner and Fabian Heggli, who finished just behind him and joined him on the podium.

Now the drivers are eagerly awaiting the next racing weekend at the state-of-the-art Red Bull Ring in Austria on 17th to 20th May 2018. Here, the CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup will be able to count on having a full starting grid.
