Gripping CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup touring car action at the Red Bull Ring!
Red Bull Ring. After this year’s season opener at the Hungaroring as part of the World Touring Car Championship (FIA WTCR), the CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup drivers arrived at another Formula 1 racing track, namely the Red Bull Ring. Highly motivated, the aspiring young drivers from karting were going to enter into a duel with ambitious gentlemen drivers on the 4.3 km long Austrian racing track. The motto is once again “Close, closer, CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup!” from May 17 to 19, 2018.
The CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup is an affordable way of enjoying touring car motor sport, and thrills drivers and fans alike with close wheel-on-wheel duels. In particular, the appealing look of the racing cars, and the prize for the overall winner, a free test drive in a TCR racing car, all add to the excitement.
David Wassermann (GER, Mainfranken Motodrom Racing Team) was once again the man of the weekend having taken 4 victories in a row now!
At the open training sessions on Thursday, the drivers had the opportunity to get used to the racing track and racing cars, which was also essential as there were no less than 3 drivers making their debut at the CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup during the racing weekend: Martin Rennhofer (AUT), Thorsten Tross (GER) and Christoph Pflügler (GER) were competing in the Chevy brand cup for the first time.
The local competitor Fabian Piwetz (AUT) lined up at the start extremely motivated as the young racing driver lives in Styria and has many fans to impress at the Red Bull Ring who are keeping their fingers crossed for the ambitious driver.
Pole position, a record and two victories for David Wassermann
Following his impressive time training, David Wassermann (GER) secured pole position for the first race and was correspondingly motivated at the start. After the lights turned green, Fabian Piwetz (AUT) took off in pursuit but was forced to keep an eye on Christoph Pflügler (GER) and Fabian Heggli (SUI) in his rear view mirror, who were hot on his trail. With Wassermann having been able to increase his lead, there was a fantastic three-way fight between Christoph Pflügler (GER), Fabian Heggli (SUI) and Thorsten Tross (GER) for the remaining place on the podium. In the heat of the battle, Heggli went into the wrong gear and had to park his racing car at the edge of the track for the TOYO TIRES MOTORSPORT team. Pflügler was victorious and won a sensational place on the podium in his first race in the cup.
Fabian Piwetz (AUT) impressed with his comeback in the cup and appears to be the only driver at the moment who can hold a candle to David Wassermann (GER)!
Fabian Piwetz & Christoph Pflügler fill the podium
In the second race, Wassermann was once again able to win through as the leader, even though Fabian Piwetz was now much closer on his tail and was able to improve his lap times. Christoph Pflügler grabbed third place again, thus collecting plenty of championship points. Thorsten Tross crossed the finishing line in 4th place and can be very happy with his debut in the cup too, Martin Rennhofer took the other qualifying position. Fabian Heggli wasn’t able to start the second race.
Now the drivers are eagerly awaiting the next racing weekend at the Automotodrom Grobnik (Croatia) from August 3 to 5, 2018. One or two of the drivers are sure to combine the racing weekend with a holiday: the Mediterranean is just a few kilometers aways from the racing track!
