Wolfgang Kriegl seals the Croatian double perfectly – Christoph Pflügler & Dennis Bröker

now within striking distance in the CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup overall ranking

Automotodrom Grobnik. A special “holiday flair” awaited the CHEVROLET Cruze Eurocup brand trophy racing drivers near the Croatian coast from July 26 – 28, 2019 at Automotodrom Grobnik. The 4.168°km long race track was only newly asphalted a year ago and therefore offers the best conditions to show exciting touring car motor sport on the fast track layout. In doing so, the drivers had to manage the changing weather with dry and hot conditions on Friday and Saturday, and permanent rain and a slippery track on Sunday. The cup touring car’s TOYO TIRES Proxes R888R Semislick tires also played a positive part here.

Battling the heat on Saturday, followed by battling the rain on Sunday

After the first test sessions on Friday, the drivers were able to adapt to the track layout at Automotodrom Grobnik. Wolfgang Kriegl (AUT, U4 Automotive Racing) did the best job in the first qualifying session to determine the starting grid on Saturday, securing pole position with a time of 1:54.952 ahead of Dennis Bröker (GER, Magnet-shop.net Racing) and Christoph Pflügler (GER, Pfister-Racing by BRIEFLOGISTIK OBERFRANKEN).

As soon as the “Grand Prix” start got underway, Kriegl took the lead, but then already saw Marcus Zeiner (AUT, Pfister-Racing by MAIN-POSTLOGISTIK) in wide-screen format in the rear-view mirror as he jumped from fifth place to second place with a lightning start. The spectators then watched a thrilling three-way battle between Zeiner, Pflügler and Bröker for second place.

Pflügler was able to break through first and set course for second place, but had to leave his CHEVROLET Cruze 1.8 LT V2 racing car just before the end of the race with gearbox problems. Dennis Bröker fought his way up to second place and crossed the finish line just before Marcus Zeiner.

Martin Rennhofer (AUT, Mainfranken Motodrom Racing) and Patrick Eppich (AUT, RAVENOL Racing Team) fought an Austrian-Austrian duel for fourth place. Due to a lapping maneuver, Rennhofer had to leave the racing line just before the end of the race, and Eppich was able to bring home a great fourth place in his touring car debut finishing in front of Rennhofer and Heiko Kraft (GER, Pfister-Racing by TOP-EXPRESS).

Marcus Zeiner (AUT) won a place on the podium in the first race on Saturday

Rainy race on Sunday sees Kriegl at the top again

With continuous rain having moved over the race track overnight, the cards were reshuffled again. In slippery weather conditions with limited visibility it was now a priority for the racers to see the finish line and get the touring cars safely to the finish.

Wolfgang Kriegl took the lead again, followed by Christoph Pflügler and Dennis Bröker. The first three drivers managed to distance themselves from the rest of the field and despite the difficult conditions they were able to lap the race track quickly and flawlessly.

Marcus Zeiner took 4th place ahead of Heiko Kraft, who managed to finish his touring car debut in the top 5 and seemed comfortable in the rainy conditions.

Christoph Pflügler and Dennis Bröker are now within the striking distance of the leader Andreas Eichhorn (GER) in the overall ranking, and with 4 more races to go it promises to be an extremely exciting final sprint to the season. The next races are taking place from August 23 – 25, 2019 at Slovakiaring (SK).
